Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra to Hold 5th Annual Spring Concert

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (MYPO) will hold its 5th Annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at Baldwin High School Auditorium. Violin soloist Samuel Lim, student of Leah Tinkleman, will perform Concerto No. 22 by G. Viotti. The public is welcome to attend this free concert; donations will be accepted.

The program will include works by Tschaikovsky, Offenbach, Grainger and Telemann, plus selections from “Beauty and the Beast,” “Harry Potter” and more. Music directors are Lance Jo, Philharmonic Orchestra; and Iolani Yamashiro, String Orchestra and Beginning Strings.

More than 70 students and adults comprise MYPO’s three performance groups. Schools represented at MYPO include: Baldwin High School; Emmanuel Lutheran School; Haiku School; Haleakala Waldorf; homeschool families; Iao Intermediate School; Kahului School; Kalama Intermediate School; Kamehameha Schools-Maui; Kihei Charter School; King Kekaulike High School; Kula Elementary School; Lahainaluna High School; Makawao Elementary; Maui High School; Montessori School; Pomaika`i Elementary School; Pukalani Elementary School; Seabury Hall and St. Anthony Jr./Sr. High Schools.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward the Summer Music Festival 2010, a two-week music workshop set for June 14-25 at Pomaika`i Elementary School. Daily group and individual instruction from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. will be offered for students ages 8 – adult on violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion. Instructors include Juilliard-trained violinists, a former principal cellist with the Yamagata Symphony in Japan, and a professional percussionist currently teaching in Shanghai, China.

The mission of MYPO is to expand and enhance the music education on Maui by providing opportunities for young musicians to further develop their musicianship.
