Is it possible for a four-year old to understand algebra? According to Maui math tutor Ben Rogers, it is, and he is proving it by using the innovative teaching techniques he learned from studying with famed math teacher and developer of the Mortensen Math Method, Jerry Mortensen.

The technique uses color blocks as a tool that any four year old can use to solve a basic algebra problem. The technique is also effective for adults and a range of math levels and abilities.

A graduate of Seabury Hall, Rogers first became inspired to teach math when he failed math in high school. “The feeling was devastating. I felt like a failure and I understood how deep of an impact not being able to understand math could be on a kids self-confidence. When I discovered the work of Jerry Mortensen I knew I had discovered a tool that would transform our understanding of our math abilities.”
