Work begins today to repair damage caused by a sinkhole along Waiehu Beach Road, just below the Waiehu Heights subdivision.  The 15-foot deep, 40-foot wide hole was created when the road gave way during heavy rains Friday night.

Heavy rains Friday night caused the road to collapse along a portion of Waiehu Beach Road, resulting in a 40-foot wide sinkhole. Photo, County of Maui.

Crews from the State Department of Transportation will close the mauka bound lane of Waiehu Beach Road between Makaala and Wailupe Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for the next several weeks until work is complete.

During the repairs, traffic will be contra-flowed in both directions and delays can be expected.  If possible, commuters are asked to avoid the area, and use the Kahekili Highway as an alternate route.

Repairs include damage to a 60 inch drainage culvert, a cluster of fiber optic cables, and an 8-10 inch sewer main.

Because the culvert passes under a state highway, state workers and county public works officials will meet today to coordinate repair efforts. In the meantime the public is advised to stay away from the sinkhole which is big enough for a vehicle to fall into.
