Maui Firefighters were called to assist in returning a stranded turtle to sea after it had washed ashore in powerful tsunami wave action in Kahului this morning.
The incident was reported along Amala Street near Kahana Beach Park. County officials described the animal as a 40 to 50 pound sea turtle.
The incident was among the unusual sites reported on Maui today. In Hana Maui, residents reported seeing a 4-foot shark swimming in the whitewater as waves receded from Hana Bay early this morning.
Reports continued into this afternoon of unusual wave activity at local harbors across Maui County. The water at Kahului Harbor was observed receding as late as 11:30 this morning. There were also county reports of significant water draw back at Maalaea Harbor at 7:30 a.m., and Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa advised us of significant water draw back at the Kihei Small Boat Ramp earlier this morning.
Reports of flooding were also fielded from Kahana Beach Park, and Launiupoko Beach Park. In South Maui, Kamaole II and Kalepolepo Park, which were already damaged during the heavy rains earlier this year, were damaged further this morning during the tsunami innundation activity.
