Governor Neil Abercrombie is expected to announce his appointments to the Board of Education this morning. In November 2010, voters approved a Constitutional Amendment to switch from an elected board to an appointed one.
The nine member BOE is made up of three members from O’ahu, three at large, and one member each from the Big Island, Maui and Kauai. Governor Abercrombie will also select the chairperson. The appointments will still be subject to Senate confirmation.
BOE members will be tasked with overseeing the Department of Education (DOE), and its $1.7 billion operational budget. The department is one of the state’s largest organizations.
