An average 5.5 percent water rate increase goes into effect on Friday, July 1, 2011 for Maui water customers. The increase is expected to generate an estimated $2.9 million in additional revenues.

Officials with the county Department of Water Supply (DWS) say the increase is necessary to offset increases in electrical expenses, debt service, and operations and maintenance expenditures. Water authorities plan to use the balance of additional revenues to fund capital replacement projects.

The rate increases were approved by the Maui County Council during review of the fiscal year 2012 budget.

Water authorities not that For this is the first year since fiscal year 2005 that there is no increase in sewer rates, which will remain at their current levels due to carry-over savings. The savings is being attributed to decreases in debt service, electrical costs, construction costs, and also to higher than projected revenues.
