Discussion resumes today on the possibility of Halloween festivities returning to the Banyan Tree Park in Lahaina.

Representatives from the Lahaina Town Action Committee are requesting Historic District Approval for use of the park for their 2011 Halloween in Lahaina event.  Lynn Donovan and Jill Holley are scheduled to appear on behalf of the LTAC.

The meeting of the Maui County Cultural Resources Committee begins at 10 a.m. today (Thursday, July 7, 2011), at the West Maui Senior Center, located at 788 Pauoa Street in Lahaina.

The CRC may take action on the request as well as provide comments and recommendations.  Public testimony is also being accepted.

The event drew more than 20,000 people in its heyday, but failed to gain permit approvals for street closures and park use following the 2007 celebration.   Last year, a limited road closure was granted for the keiki portion of the event, but not for the adult celebration later in the evening.

Objections were raised in the past from those offended by adult-themed costumes and lewd conduct in an area designated as a historic site and recognized as the former capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom.  Supporters of the event, meantime, have argued that the festivities provide an economic boost to businesses, and include organized costume contests and age appropriate activities.
