On Friday, the Maui County Council will consider passing a resolution in support of new state labeling requirements for genetically-engineered materials (GMO).

Community members in favor of stringent new GMO labeling requirements are expected to come out in full force with Maui Tomorrow leading the pack. Maui Tomorrow announced in their newsletter this week that they are organizing presenters to testify at the hearing set for 9 a.m. on Friday, October 7 in the Maui County Council chambers.

Originally presented by Council Member Elle Cochran, the resolution seeks to approve the new labeling requirements for inclusion in the “state package” presented in the next legislative session by the Hawaii State Association of Counties (HSAC). This would put the bill before the state legislature for consideration and possible adoption.
