Weekend Round-Up: SOJA, DJ Vadim, Paia Surf Party

SOJA WITH THE GREEN AND ANUHEA IN CONCERT Saturday, January 28 at the MACC at 5:30 p.m.. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 on the event day.

One of Hawaii’s favorite visiting reggae bands, SOJA, will be joined by The Green & Anuhea in concert.

SOJA is a seven-piece reggae, rock, and dub band including members Jacob Hemphill (lead vocals, guitar), Bobby Lee (bass,vocals), Ryan Berty (drums) Kenny Bongos (percussion), Patrick O’Shea (keyboards), Helman Escorcia (saxophone) and Rafael Rodriguez (trumpet).

Local band The Green will join songstress Anuhea, who is known for her own twist on island and reggae music.


DJ VADIM TROPI-STEP TOUR WITH KAREN BE Friday, January 27 at 9 p.m. at Charley’s Restaurant in Paia. Tickets are $15.


Russian hip-hop master DJ Vadim is in town for his Tropi-step Tour 2012, taking with him local and traveling artists Karen Be, Helmet Conspiracy, and DJ’s Trip and Nadi.

DJ Vadim is renowned as one of the most innovative artist in trip-hop since the 1990s.

With Karen Be’s stunning live vocals and beat constructs from several talented DJs, attendees will get to experience a night of unique music and crazy dancing they won’t soon forget.


PAIA FOURTH FRIDAY TOWN PARTY, “BIG SURF” Friday, January 27 from 6-9 p.m. in Paia Town. 

This month’s Paia Fourth Friday Town Party’s theme is “Big Surf,” celebrating Paia’s love of North Shore surfing.

Paia Inn will host a night of food, fun, and fashion celebrating this month’s surf theme.

Puka Puka will have a screening of windsurf film which was filmed at Hookipa Beach, Trade Wind starting earlier in the evening.

Indigo Paia will host a mellow pre-event party for the DJ Vadim Tropi-step Tour concert which will start at Charley’s at 9 p.m. Wine will start to flow around 6 p.m.

Cafe Mambo will be screening surf films throughout the evening during dining.

Freshly made organic falafel plates will be sold at the Paia Courtyard starting at 5 p.m. Plates are $4 and include a half pita bread filled with three hot falafels, salad and tahini sauce.

BEN VEREEN Friday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the MACC. Tickets are $12, $37, and $47.

Ben Vereen is a Broadway star, actor and dancer who has been in the lead in his trade for decades

On Broadway, Vereen has appeared in renowned shows Wicked, Fosse, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar and Pippin.

Maui fans anticipate a lively performance with Vereen’s never-ceasing zeal for the stage.

JOURMA KAUKONEN ACOUSTIC Friday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Historic Iao Theater. Tickets are $28, $35 and $45.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jourma Kaukonen will perform an acoustic solo guitar concert.

Kaukonen is appreciated for his years of work with Jefferson Airplane, his band Hot Tuna, and for being ranked #54 on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 greatest guitar players.

DEREK WARFIELD AND THE YOUNG WOLFE TONES Friday, January 27 at 7 p.m. at the MACC. Tickets are $25.

Derek Warfiled and The Young Wolfe Tones are known as one of Ireland’s best traditional Irish folk groups.

Warfield has played for four decades with 13 bestselling albums and number one hits.

The band will bring their authentic Irish sound to the shores of Maui for a night of storytelling and culture through music.

FIRE, WATER, & LIGHT PHOTO EXHIBIT OPENING NIGHT Sunday, January 29 at 8 p.m. at South Shore Tiki Lounge. 

South Shore Tiki Lounge will host the opening night of the new photo exhibit by local photographer Sean Michael Hower entitled “Fire, Water, & Light.”

At 10 p.m., Kanoa will take the stage with live, Maui-based jams.

‘ORDER OF THE WHITE ROSE’ PUNK SHOW Friday, January 27 at 9 p.m. at Three’s Bar and Grill. No cover charge. 

Maui Punk band Order of the White Rose will rock Three’s Bar and Grill with local band the Happy Haoles.

HERITAGE FILM FESTIVAL: LYCHEE THIEVES Sunday, January 29 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Heritage Film Festival presents a film about a lychee tree causing upheaval in relationships as locals fight for its fruit.

The film reveals some of the humorous aspects of local interactions in Hawaii.
