Volunteers Sought in Anticipation of Maui Canoe Launch

Hui o Wa‘a Kaulua is calling for volunteers to help with finishing and outfitting Maui’s voyaging canoe, Mo’okiha o Pi’ilani, prior to its planned launched on Dec. 21 during the winter solstice.

The group is seeking kūpuna to provide cultural support; community members to make nets for the canoe; and volunteers that are experienced in woodworking, carpentry, and wood finishing.

Projects underway include: sanding and varnishing; building shelving in the hulls; constructing and installing stanchion rails; and building the navigators’ seats.

The Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani, Maui’s first deep ocean traditional voyaging canoe, is currently undergoing finishing touches at Kamehameha Iki Park in West Maui.


The effort is being led by Hui o Wa‘a Kaulua under the direction of Captain Timi Gilliom.


Volunteers are invited to call the Hui at 667-4050, email [email protected], or visit the Hui in person at 525 Front Street.

Volunteer work days start at 9 a.m. every Saturday.

Current board of directors for the Hui o Wa‘a Kaulua, Mo’okiha o Pi’ilani project include: President Leonard Kimokeo Kapahulehua; Vice President Lyons Naone; Secretary Jack Breen; and Treasurer Melanie Kehaunani King.  Directors include: ‘Ānela Gutierrez; Mamo Hussey; Palani Wright; Carl “Kalae” Eldridge; Byron Washom; and Donna Sterling.  Captains include: Timi Gilliom; Kala Baybayan; Palani Wright; and Faavae Maluhia.
