The Maui Police Department announced the promotion of five individuals to the rank of sergeant.

The promotions take effect on Dec. 2, 2013, and include: Alan Brown, James Tery, Derek Kaaukai, Greg Rowe and Stuart Kunioka.

Alan Brown, a 20-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, began his police career in 1993 after serving with the US Army.

Since joining the department he has been assigned to patrol districts in Lahaina, on Molokaʻi and in Wailuku.

His current assignment is the “visitor oriented police officer” in Kīhei.

James Terry is a 12-year veteran of the department, and has worked in Lahaina, Hāna, Kīhei and Wailuku, over the course of his career.

Terry currently serves as a member of the Highway Incident Traffic Technician team, responding to critical highway accidents that require investigation. Terry is also an instructor for CPR first aid and Taser use, and is a member of the department’s Honor Guard, Crisis Intervention Team and PEER Support division.

Terry’s latest position within the department was serving as a school resource officer at Maui High School in Kahului.

Derek Kaaukai is an 18-year veteran of the Maui Police Department. Over the course of his career, he has worked in Wailuku Patrol, and with the Domestic Violence Unit.

Greg Rowe joined the department in 2001 as a member of the 57th Recruit Class. He was first assigned to the Wailuku Patrol district, where he served as a field training officer.

Rowe later joined the Traffic Section’s Vehicle Homicide Unit in 2008, and is currently a member of the department’s riot team and Mobile Command Vehicle team.

Stuart Kunioka is a 14-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, joining the force in July of 1999.

Since joining the department, he has been assigned to Hāna Patrol and Wailuku Patrol, where he was also a field training officer. He also served as an instructor for landlord/tenant code and Maui County ordinances.

Kunioka is currently part of the Community Police Officer Section, where he serves the Pāʻia and Haʻikū areas. During the 2012-2013 fiscal year the unit was recognized as the Team Of The Year for the Maui Police Department.
