The Maui County Council has announced the passage of a resolution in a 6-1 vote, authorizing the appointment of Danny Mateo as County Clerk.

The former council member from Molokaʻi currently serves as an executive assistant to Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa.

During his time with the Maui County Council, Mateo served for 10 consecutive years before reaching his term limit in 2012.

Mateo said ensuring a smooth and unflawed 2014 election process would be his top priority, according to a council announcement.

In addition to elections, the county clerk’s office is also responsible for maintaining certain public records, and making them available to the public.

Council Chair Gladys Baisa released a statement through a council press release calling Mateo a “consummate professional.

“He dedicates every ounce of himself to the job.”

In the announcement Mateo said, “It will be a learning curve for me but I will not hesitate to request information from state election officers to make sure that we are up to par with standards.

“I realize that there are major issues that need to be addressed on how the office can provide efficient and effective service to the citizens. The office has excellent staff that I will work closely with to gain stability.”

Mateo’s appointment takes effect later this month.
