Bears Open MIL Hoop Season With Pair of Wins

The seventh-ranked Baldwin High School boys basketball team opened the 2014 Maui Interscholastic League regular season with a pair of lopsided wins over Maui High and King Kekaulike, respectively.

Ryan Garces led all scorers with 15 points in the Bears’ 63-41 rout of the Sabers at home on Friday. Phillip Thomas added 13.

Maui High’s Daniel Fonseca had nine points and Tristan Nichols added six.

Baldwin (5-2 overall) improved to 2-0 on Saturday with its 50-35 victory at King Kekaulike. All-star swingman Teva Eldridge scored 15 points and Kody Takushi and Garces each added eight.

Baldwin got a strong defensive effort to open the second half, outscoring the Upcountry school 16-9 in the third period.

Austin Ferreira scored 15 points and Chase Iwata-Bartelme had 11 for Na Alii (2-1).

The Bears are currently ranked No. 7 in the state according to last week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 Boys Basketball Prep Poll. Lahainaluna is ranked No. 1 in the newspaper’s Top 10 Girls Basketball Prep Poll.
