The Fairmont Kea Lani hotel on Maui will turn off its lights for one hour on Saturday night, March 29, beginning at 8:30 p.m., in observance of Earth Hour.

Hotel executives announced their participation in the global event, saying they hope it will shed light on the issue of climate change.

Earth Hour was established in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund and is now scheduled annually on the last Saturday of March.

“Participating in WWF’s Earth Hour is a simple way to show you want to be a part of the solution, and it sends a powerful message: Together we can make a difference,” the Kea Lani announcement stated.

Fairmont Kea Lani General Manager Charles Head said the event is a “terrific opportunity to demonstrate our ongoing pledge to environmental awareness and energy conservation.”

During the one-hour planned outage, hotel officials say they will partner with Lululemon Athletica Maui to host a special “lights out” yoga class lit by tiki torches on the resort’s ocean-front Polo Lawn. The activity includes a guided meditation and yoga exercises that serve to strengthen, balance and detoxify.

The hotel is also offering eco-friendly cocktails and unplugged entertainment at its Luana Lounge, candlelight dining at its Kō restaurant, and floating candles and outdoor luminaries in the hotel lobby fountain and along outdoor paths.
