While many Mauians were home watching college football or spending time with family, a few water enthusiasts found their way to Kahului Harbor on New Year’s Day.

Although conditions were not ideal, they were certainly better than the three other places Sebastian Gallimore and Sammy Parrella checked out before joining the 20 to 30 others who were enjoying the “fun-size waves” in Central Maui brought on by a mix of north and northwest swell energy.

“We tried three other spots and it wasn’t as good, then we went from here and it looked fun, so we ended up here,” said the 18-year-old Gallimore.

MauiNow Chief Meteorologist Malika Dudley reported a High Surf Advisory for north-facing shores of Molok’ai and Maui through Thursday at 6 p.m.

The two long-time friends and surfers made the trek from Kihei in the mid-afternoon hours and shared the “Jetties” break on the Kahului-side of the breakwater with other surfers and bodyboarders. Many of the standup paddlers were enjoying the “Middles” and “Harbor Lights” breaks.
