An estimated 11,500 gallons of wastewater overflowed at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility before being contained on Tuesday, March 31, 2015.

Officials with the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management say the overflow was caused by a mechanical failure at the plant headworks.

The incident reportedly started at 8 a.m. and was stopped by 8:20 a.m.

Department officials say the wastewater flowed from the headworks building to the adjacent grassy area at the facility.
