Kumu Kahua Theatre will present “Shoyu on Rice” by Scot Izuka on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater.

The play takes place in the mid-1980s. Students attending a Catholic all-boys high school deal with their use of pidgin English when a substitute teacher from Kansas takes over their classroom. Meanwhile, the substitute struggles to learn local ways in both the classroom and in the home of her Japanese-American fiancé’s parents.

Preshow dinner catered by AK’s Cafe.

Tickets are $28.

Purchase tickets in person at The MACC Box Office or by calling (808) 242-SHOW (7469). Box Office windows and phone lines are open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Or purchase tickets 24/7 online.
