The Maui Humane Society will again be offering free spay and neuter clinics in June, this time for cats.

Five M*A*S*H (short for Mobile Animal Surgical Hospital) clinics will be offered at the Maui Humane Society on: Monday to Wednesday, June 22 to 24, and Friday to Saturday, June 26 to 27.

Organization representatives say their goal is to sterilize 125 cats per day, for a total of 600 sterilizations.

Organization workers will be accepting both feral and tame cats at the clinics.

Maui Humane Society is working in conjunction with Animal Balance, which organizes veterinarians and vet techs from all over the country who volunteer their time to work at these M*A*S*H style sterilization clinics.

The Maui Humane Society and Animal Balance will also be working together to trap feral cats in areas where the feral cat population is most concentrated.

According to a MHS announcement, these feral cats will be sterilized, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and returned to their location.

In addition to the free surgery, cats will also receive a free microchip and a basic core vaccine, which protects against the feline panleukopenia virus, that has recently resurfaced in central and Upcountry Maui.

According to MHS, the value of these services can range anywhere from $200 to more than $400, depending on various factors.

MHS representatives say they plan to hold these M*A*S*H style clinics for cats several times per year, for the next five years, as part of a concentrated effort to reduce pet overpopulation. MHS also plans to hold dog clinics on a quarterly basis.

For appointments, interested pet owners are asked to call (808) 877-3680, and select “option 3.”
