Ask the Mayor: When Will Streets in Pukalani Be Repaved?
Q: Are the roads in the upper part of Pukalani Terrace, from Pukalani Street to Alalani Street, on the schedule for repaving in the future? I know that it was brought to your attention that Iolani Street has deteriorated a lot since the Maui Bus uses this street everyday, the pavement has numerous dips and cracks and gets worse day by day! Other streets in the area look like Hansen Road did prior to repaving.
A: Aloha. Yes, our engineers recognize that many of the streets in this area are rapidly deteriorating. For that reason, they have recently completed a geotechnical evaluation of select roads to understand why they are deteriorating and how to properly plan for future roadway improvements.
Already they have noted that some of the roads in the area need to be totally rebuilt from the ground up, just as we did with Hansen and Kokomo roads. Hopefully, we can qualify for federal funding to pay for a majority of the work as we did with those two roads as well.
So far we have identified Loha, Iolani, Pukalani and Liholani streets as being eligible for federal aid.
In the meantime, we are scheduled to resurface Elilani Street in 2017, hopefully after we get our Fiscal Year 2016 budget approved by council.
