UPDATE: Near Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident at McGregor’s Point

On Thursday, February 18, 2016 at approximately 1:06 p.m., a Motor Vehicle Crash occurred on Honoapiilani Highway, 0.1 miles north of the Scenic Lookout.
The crash occurred as a white 2012 Hyundai Elantra 4-door sedan, operated by a 57 year old male from Gary IN., was traveling northbound on Honoapiilani Highway when he crossed left of center and clipped the rear driver side quarter panel of a silver 2015 Nissan Altima 4-door sedan, traveling southbound, operated by 57 year old male from Bedford, TX.
The Hyundai then then continued northbound in the southbound lane and collided head on into a gray 2015 Dodge Dart 4-door sedan, operated by a 45 year old male from Brookline, MA.
The operator of the Hyundai Elantra was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with critical, life threatening, injuries.
The four (4) occupants of the Nissan Altima and the two (2) occupants of the Dodge Dart were all transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in fair condition.
Preliminary investigation reveals that airbags were deployed in all three (3) vehicles and all involved were wearing their seatbelts at the time on the crash.
Speed is a factor in the crash. The involvement of drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
UPDATE: 4:33 p.m. 2/18/16
The Honoapiʻilani Highway is now OPEN in both directions. Motorists are asked to exercise patience and to expect delays as traffic resumes its normal flow. Maui police reopened the roadway at 4:33 p.m. This was following a multi-vehicle traffic accident reported at 1:30 p.m. on the highway near McGregor’s Point. Police say at least one individual suffered life-threatening injuries, prompting a traffic investigation at the scene.
UPDATE: 3:36 p.m. 2/18/16
Maui police have started a contraflow of traffic on the Honoapiʻilani Highway. The alternating traffic began at 3:36 p.m. and comes following a serious accident that forced the temporary closure of the road since 1:30 this afternoon. At least one individual suffered life-threatening injuries in the multi-vehicle crash reported near Mile 7 of the highway near McGregor’s Point. Motorists are asked to exercise patience and to expect significant delays.
UPDATE: 2:35 p.m. 2/18/16
The Honoapiʻilani Highway remains closed in both directions following a serious traffic accident reported earlier this afternoon at Mile 7 near McGregor’s Point. Maui Police Lieutenant William Juan tells us traffic units with the department are on scene and have launched an investigation. According to Lt. Juan, there is at least one individual that suffered life-threatening injuries in the multi-vehicle crash. There is currently no estimated time on when the road will reopen. The closure went into effect at around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016.

The Honoapiʻilani Highway at Mile 7 near McGregor’s Point is closed in both directions due to a multi-vehicle accident. Motorists are asked to exercise patience as crews respond to clear debris from the roadway. The closure went into effect at 1:33 p.m. There is currently no estimated time on when the road will reopen.
