Dear Mayor Arakawa,
Q: There are hundreds of West Maui residents who are affected by the lack of somewhere to get a safety check for their two-wheel transportation. We need help. There are a lot of mopeds, scooters and motorcycles in West Maui. Various uses include cheap transportation, easy to park in Lahaina, wind in the hair, etc.
The common denominator among them is the state-mandated annual safety check. There were two locations that would check two-wheeled vehicles. West Maui Safety and Aloha Motorsport. West Maui stopped doing them two years ago. As of this week, Aloha has quit, too. Because vehicle operators are legally required to keep their safety checks current, can something be done to make it somewhat convenient?
A: I believe you have been misinformed about the current inspection station that is conducting moped safety inspections. West Maui Safety Check, located in Lahaina at 1000 Limahana Place, #J, is still performing moped inspections on the West side.
The county supervisor who oversees the vehicle inspection program spoke with the inspector and owner this week and confirmed that they continue to offer moped inspections.
Vehicle owners may contactl the DMVL Call Center at (808) 270-7363 for assistance in locating a Safety Inspection Station.
