unnamedMaui Now’s Malika Dudley interviewed Maui Humane Society‘s adoptions counselor Rachael Magee and volunteer extraordinaire Alice Bennett.

VOTE for Alice by clicking HERE. This will take you directly to the voting page where all you have to do is click on the red “Vote Now!” button. They do not ask you for any other information. It’s as simple as that!

You can vote once every 24 hours and there are only a couple days left to vote. Alice is already in the top 10 so if we can push her into the top 5 we will earn her the $10,000 for the Maui Humane Society.

“As you know, Maui is paradise – unless you are a homeless pet. In 2015 alone, the Maui Humane Society took in over 8,000 animals (everything from dogs and cats to bunnies, turtles, chickens and goats!), and on average, the Maui Humane Society received an average of 21 pets per day, with 30% being surrendered by their owners. That said, in 2015, MHS programs and services helped to provide 1,894 adoptions, where animals found their forever homes, we reunited 831 families with their lost pets and through our transfer program ”Wings of Aloha”, we transferred 470 homeless Maui pets to adoption-guaranteed rescues and shelters on the mainland. As you can imagine all of this takes a lot of work and energy and although we have a truly dedicated staff, we rely heavily on our volunteers to stay afloat and to keep displaced pets healthy and happy until they find their forever homes.

One of our amazing volunteers, Alice Bennett is among 10 finalists in the Hill’s Pet Nutrition Shelter Heroes Contest, which recognizes the most dedicated pet care volunteers across the country. Alice has been volunteering at the Maui Humane Society for about two years and during that time she has logged over 1300 volunteer hours. Alice does a little bit of everything at the shelter, from walking dogs to helping with our Beach Buddies program to playing with cats and working at our high volume spay and neuter clinics (she is a retired critical care nurse). Alice has a special affinity for senior dogs and takes extra time to walk and care for them when she is at the shelter.

In honor of National Volunteer Week, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is hosting the contest as part of its Food Shelter & Love program. Contest participants were asked to submit videos on the Hill’s Facebook page, and the Maui Humane Society decided to nominate Alice and we were chosen as a Top 10 finalist! The key now is to get everyone to vote for the Maui Humane Society, every day between now and April 10. The 5 finalists with the most votes receive a $10,000 dollar donation to their shelter from HillsFoodShelterLove.

Our little shelter on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is up against some BIG shelters, with huge on-line followings and we are hoping that our Maui community will support our shelter and vote for Alice!”
