Emergency Services Dispatchers on Maui were honored today with a proclamation issued by Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa declaring this week Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in the County of Maui.  The Maui observance from April 10-15, 2016, coincides with the National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which honors dispatchers as being the “first and most critical contact” citizens have when reporting an emergency.

In his proclamation, Mayor Arakawa said, “public safety telecommunicators have contributed substantially to the apprehension of criminals, suppression of fires and rapid response to individuals needing emergency assistance.”

He said that dispatchers serve as a “vital link” for law enforcement officers and firefighters by monitoring their activities by radio, and ensuring their safety by transmitting accurate communications.

“The observance of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week highlights the compassion, understanding and professionalism that has been exhibited by Maui County’s telecommunicators as they have served our residents in countless ways,” the proclamation stated.
