Maui High Face Pearl City in State Baseball Opener Tonight

Maui High will play Pearl City today in a 7 p.m. D-I first-round headliner as the Wally Yonamine Foundation State Baseball Championship swings into action at Maehara Stadium.

The Valley Isle is hosting the D-I tournament, beginning with game one between Kalani and Mililani at 10:45 a.m. in Wailuku. Game two between Hilo and Waipahu begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by Punahou and Campbell at 4:15 p.m.

The Sabers and the Chargers meet in tonight’s nightcap, with the winner facing fourth-seeded Waiakea on Thursday, at 1:30 p.m.

As Maui Interscholastic League champion second-seeded Baldwin High School has a first-round bye and will play a 7 p.m. quarterfinal Thursday against the winner of today’s game between Hilo and Waipahu.

Baldwin, which went 14-0 in MIL play this season en route to claiming its seventh consecutive league crown, is 23-1 overall this year. The Bears’ only loss was against Punahou here early in the season.

Mid-Pacific, the state runner-up in 2015, is seeded No. 1 this year. Kailua received the No. 3 seed.

The Wally Yonamine Foundation Division II State Baseball Championships are being held this weekend at Wong Stadium on the Big Island.

Molokai is seeded fourth in the D-II event, which opens Thursday and runs through Saturday, May 7.

Molokai, which has won the last four MIL D-II titles and 37 straight league games, face St. Francis in a quarterfinal Thursday. The winner will play Friday against Kalaheo or top-seeded Kamehameha Hawaii.

Kauai was seeded second and Kapolei received the No. 3 seed. Maryknoll, which won a third consecutive championship last season, is not in this year’s field.
