A young man on a motorized scooter was able to walk away from an accident with an MEO bus this afternoon with only a hurt arm, sources tell Maui Now.

The incident was reported at around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 on the Honoapiʻilani Highway fronting Puamana Beach Park in Lahaina.

Witnesses tell Maui Now that the operator of the scooter swerved off the shoulder northbound in front of the park and into the path of an MEO bus carrying seniors on a field trip.

“Fortunately he slid off the bike before the bus hit the bike and was able to walk away from the accident, apparently with only a hurt arm,” a witness said.

The scooter operator was being treated by medics on scene.

According to witness reports, the bus ran over the tire and front fender of the bike. The seniors are waiting for another Kaunoa bus to pick pick them up and take us back to Central Maui.

Police say the individual was 18-year-old and was on a rental.
