Maui firefighters quickly brought a brush fire under control in the old macadamia nut fields mauka of Kahekili Highway on Sunday night, Aug. 14, 2016.

The incident was reported at 9:56 p.m. following a report of smoke and a possible brush fire off of Kahekili Highway, between Makaʻala Drive and Waiehu Beach Road.

At 10:04 p.m. Wailuku firefighters arrived to find a 20 x 30 foot area of brush burning, about 100 feet into the fields mauka of the highway. Crews brought the fire under control at 10:14 p.m. and called it extinguished at 10:34 p.m.

Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said that as crews were making their way in, a suspicious vehicle with two occupants was seen leaving the area of the fire.

Firefighters were not able to determine the fire’s cause. No structures were threatened.
