Dog Found on Baldwin Avenue, Recovering From Injuries
The Maui Humane Society is seeking the community’s help with donations for the medical treatment of a dog found by a Good Samaritan in the middle of Baldwin Avenue last week. A passerby found “Addie” on Friday, Sept. 21, and brought her to the Maui Humane Society to get care for her injuries.
“When Addie was brought in, she was covered in mud and dried blood, including her extremities and inside her mouth,” said the Maui Humane Society’s Nancy Willis.
“When MHS vet staff cleaned her up, it was discovered that she has a severe jaw fracture which will require surgery. She also had bruising and abrasions on her neck and body and it is suspected that she was hit by a car,” said Willis, noting that Addie was also underweight and unable to eat, and had to be hand fed a liquid diet with a syringe.
Addie is estimated to be six months old, and despite her injuries, staff say she has a “very sweet temperament.”
“She is super sweet and affectionate, despite the pain she must be in,” said Willis.
Addie has already had x-rays and the next step is surgery to repair her jaw; however, the MHS says financial help is needed to pay for the surgery. As such, MHS has selected Addie to be a recipient of The Hope Fund program.
The Hope Fund was started in 2010 in honor of a shelter dog named Hope, who entered the shelter with an untreated injury that had become life-threatening.
Organization representatives say the fund allows the Maui Humane Society to go above and beyond what is typically affordable, to provide treatment and life-saving surgeries to homeless pets that exceed the normal resources at the shelter.
Donations from the Hope Fund have been used to pay for everything from heartworm treatments to amputations. “Receiving this much needed medical attention will can greatly increase an animal’s quality of life, and ultimately allow them to be adopted into their forever homes,” said Willis.
The Maui Humane Society is asking for donations from the members of the community to help pay for Addie’s medical treatment. The goal is to get Addie back in good health so she can get adopted and “find the forever home that she so richly deserves,” said Willis.
