Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents the acclaimed physical theater company and mask imagineers the Wonderheads offering their unconventional love story, LOON. The performance is in the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 pm.

In Loon, the Wonderheads bring audiences a love story that whisks a man to the moon and back. In the play, a lonely janitor who is plagued by isolation and tickled by whispers of childhood imagination, has hit rock bottom and discovers that he has nowhere to go…but up. And up. But the production’s fantastical plot poses the question of whether the janitor’s plucking the moon from the sky will bring him the love he is searching for. Loon in a love story the likes of which audiences have never experienced.

LOON is performed in full-face mask, a form so magical audiences of all ages will forget their age and marvel in childlike delight. Wordless and whimsical, it has been described by audiences as watching a living cartoon, or a live-action Pixar film. This award-winning production offers a beautifully surprising mix of physical theatre, comedy and pathos.

WONDERHEADS is a multi-award winning physical theatre company specializing in mask performance and creative visual storytelling for adults and children. Their work is performed in full-face mask, a wordless form that mixes European larval mask traditions with character mask styles, resulting in a whimsical, wordless craft rarely seen on American stages.

Their productions have garnered multiple accolades, and they were recently finalists in Scion Motivate, a national contest conducted by Toyota recognizing young entrepreneurs in the creative arts. When the ‘Heads are not busy touring to communities throughout North America, they can be found in their home base of Portland, Oregon, hatching plans for new and devious ways to evoke a sense of joy and wonder in all they meet.

Tickets are $28, with kids 12 and under half-price, plus applicable fees. Available at the MACC Box Office, by phone at 242-SHOW or online at Loon is recommended for ages 10 and older. There will be a post-performance talk-story session with the creative team.
