Staidle Inspires Maui Businesses to Succeed with Vision and Action
The Maui Business Brainstormers hosted guest speaker Stephanie Staidle of San Francisco for an afternoon workshop on Thursday, May 11, to help Maui business owners use new approaches for success.
Staidle, the founder of The Right Brain Entrepreneur, gave a free workshop “3 Fundamentals for a Successful Business You Love” at the Pioneer Inn’s Snug Harbor Room in Lahaina.
Over 20 MBB members attended the event. Attendee Michelle Rebar said that the worskhop “sparked new ideas and gave me a direction to follow,” and John Gelert added that the workshop “gave me lots of good information, clear and straight-forward, that I can use.”
In her interactive and informative presentation, Staidle explained three fundamental elements required to build a successful business you love. She began by reviewing current left brain/right brain research, explaining how our education system does not prepare us well for entrepreneurship, and debunking the myth that we are each born with either right brain or left brain as our strength.
The first fundamental element necessary for success, according to Staidle, is the ability to examine limiting beliefs and shift, or re-frame, the way you see these to instead empower you. Secondly, entrepreneurs need a strong, clear vision for their business. The vision should inspire others, represent your stand in the world and external impact, and “get you out of the bed in the morning.” This is the “why” of why you are in business. Finally, successful business owners need to focus on taking action now. As Staidle said “Perfectionism is procrastination in different clothing.” Actions should be aligned with the vision and “why” of the business.
For each of the fundamental elements, Staidle shared anecdotes and stories about various clients and their road to success. Some clients transformed themselves from a caterer to an agent for healing through food and connecting the community. Another needed some Tough Love Coaching to proceed with a crowdfunding launch after spending months in planning.
Throughout the workshop, attendees participated in three interactive group exercises aligned with each of the three principles. The first exercise helped attendees re-frame a limiting belief. The second identified Passions, Gifts and Skills, and Heartbreak as the trifecta underlying the “why” or vision behind a successful business. The final exercise was to create a mind map to visualize a key challenge in each attendee’s current business, leading to specific actions. Attendee Ellen Levinsky noted that the workshop helped her “think about how I limit myself and how to effectively counteract that tendency.” For Kathy Munsen, her takeaway was the importance of “having a strong vision connected to my heart.”
Staidle summarized her workshop with some final advice against “doing it all alone,” instead recommending that entrepreneurs need to surround themselves with other entrepreneurs. She noted that Maui Business Brainstormers provides an ideal community to support and nurture business owners on the road to success, so they can share experiences and ideas with others along the way.
