The week-long day camp is led by a team of occupational and recreational therapists that will lead the children through a variety of activities that include working with the furry, four-legged therapists-in-training from Assistance Dogs of Hawaiʻi.

Activities include a petting zoo, doggie day spa and obstacle course, talent show, carnival day, gardening and planter decorating, pillow making, and memory book making. The campers will also help the team at Assistance Dogs of Hawaiʻi train, exercise, and care for the assistance dogs in training. The week will culminate with an Aloha BBQ to celebrate the campers’ accomplishments with their parents and families.

Maureen “Mo” Maurer, executive director for the organization said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for children on Maui to experience a summer day camp designed specifically for their needs and it gives our assistance dogs-in-training an opportunity to interact with children and adults as they prepare to transition to their roles helping people with disabilities, and in hospitals and courtrooms.”

Assistance Dogs of Hawaiʻi is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides children and adults with physical disabilities professionally trained dogs that will increase their independence and enhance the quality of their lives.
