The 38-year-old director, screenwriter, producer and editor is best known for writing and directing his second feature film, Short Term 12.

His new film stars Oscar Award winner Brie Larson and Academy Award nominees Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts.

It’s based on a bestselling memoir by Jeannette Walls that tells the story of four kids who have an unconventional childhood with their “free-spirited” parents who both “inspire and inhibit them,” according to the movie’s website.

The film shows today on Maui at the Consolidated Theaters Kaahumanu 6 at 10:30 a.m., 1:20 p.m., 4:10 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.

The film is presented by Lionsgate, a Gil Netter/Lionsgate production with screenplay by Cretton and Andrew Lanham.
