Murder Investigation: Fatal Stabbing at Maui’s Queen Ka‘ahumanu Mall

One male is dead and another is in police custody after a fatal stabbing at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului.
Police responded to the scene at around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018. The incident was reported near the restrooms outside of the Men’s Macy’s store on the second floor of the shopping center.
Maui police Lt. Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that officers immediately made checks of the shopping center and surrounding streets after witnesses reported a male suspect fleeing the area. An individual fitting the description of the suspect was pointed out by bystanders at Kahului Community Center Park. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Wailuku Police Station.
According to Lt. Okamoto, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of Murder in the Second Degree but had yet to be charged at last report.
The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and has yet to be identified.
Authorities say the investigation is still in it’s preliminary stage and remains very active.
This was not the first report of a stabbing in a restroom at the mall. On May 20, 2011, a stabbing was also reported at the men’s restroom near the men’s department of Macy’s.
Maui police are conducting an investigation near the restrooms outside of the Men’s Macy’s store on the second floor of the Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Kahului.
Police responded with multiple units at around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, March 18, 2018.
The investigation also involves police response to the Kahului Community Center Park.
Maui police have not yet released details about the incident.
