UPDATE: Body Recovered From Waters off Kanahā, Maui

UPDATE: The victim has since been identified as 64 year old Leo Kaya of Pukalani. Maui police say the cause of Kaya’s death is still under investigation.

The body of an elderly man was recovered from waters off of Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului on Thursday afternoon.

Wailuku patrol officers were called to the scene at around 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, for a report of a body found floating in waters at the location.

Police say life saving efforts were initiated; however, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.


The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The cause of death has not been determined.


Police have launched an Unattended Death Investigation into the incident.
