A pedestrian riding an electronic skateboard suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Kaʻahumanu Avenue in Kahului on Monday night.

The incident was reported at around 11:07 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018.

According to police reports, a gray 2014 Ford Focus sedan was traveling in the inner northbound lane on Kaʻahumanu Avenue just past the intersection of Kāne Avenue, when it struck a pedestrian that was riding an electric skateboard in the same lane of travel.

Police say the pedestrian was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  The pedestrian has since been identified as 48 year old John William Myers who has no local address.

The operator of the Ford Focus, a 19 year old male from Wailuku, was not injured.

Police say the involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are unknown at this time as the investigation is on-going.

This was Maui County’s 16th traffic fatality of 2018, compared to 13 at the same time last year.
