Maui police arrested a Pukalani man following a vehicle pursuit in Māʻalaea on Monday afternoon.

William Domen, 38, was charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, resisting an order to stop, resisting arrest, reckless driving and driving without a valid license.

Police had responded to the area for a report of a stolen van at Carl’s Jr. in Māʻalaea, and later observed the vehicle being operated on the Maui Veteran’s Highway.

Police say the operator refused police attempts at a traffic stop.

According to department reports, the van came to a stop near Kaimana Road and the male operator jumped out and ran across the highway and into the bushes.

Officers located the suspect and attempted to place him under arrest, at which time police say the male struggled with officers.

According to court records, Domen made his first court appearance on Wednesday and is scheduled to appear for a continued preliminary hearing this afternoon.  He was also ordered to refrain from contacting the man who reportedly lived in the stolen van.

Total bail for Domen was set at $25,000.
