Maui Real Property Tax Sale Nets $1.3 Million

The County of Maui Department of Finance resolved 95 delinquent property tax accounts and brought in more than $1.3 million during this fiscal year’s real property tax sale process ending on May 21, the department announced.

The sale was held May 21 at the Kīhei Community Center.

“Foreclosing these properties is always the County’s last option,” said Department of Finance Deputy Director May-Anne Alibin. “Although this year’s tax sale auctioned only one property, the tax sale process has been another great success because the County was able to bring these delinquent accounts current, and, at the same time, taxpayers are able to remain in their homes or keep their properties.”

Acting Mayor Sandy Baz said, “The County of Maui’s goal is for all property taxpayers to remain current in their tax bills and not risk losing their property to a tax sale. We’re grateful to the Finance Department’s Real Property Tax Collections staff for their hard work and dedication in collecting outstanding money owed to the County.”

A tax sale process involved properties that have been delinquent for three or more years and have received their final notice of tax sale. Properties were removed from the tax sale list if all taxes, penalties, interest and costs had been paid in full prior to the date of the sale.
