Hula Ma‘i, Sept. 12 at McCoy Studio Theater
Hula Ma‘i: Procreation Chants and Dances with Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt, takes place this Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater.
Hula Ma‘i often celebrate and encourage the continuation of aliʻi family lines. Hula Maʻi are often misunderstood and misinterpreted in modern Western contexts. This presentation will look at several chants as poetical expressions as well as exhibit them in hula form.
Participating hālau include: Pāʻū O Hiʻiaka, Hālau Kamaluokaleihulu, Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka, Hālau O Ka Hanu Lehua, and Hālau o Ka Hanu Lehua. (Parental discretion is advised)
Tickets are $20. There is a 10% discount for MACC Members and tickets are half-price kids under the age of 12 (plus applicable fees).
The 2019 Kū Mai Ka Hula competition weekend begins with this special presentation and panel discussion facilitated by Kumu Hōkūlani Holt.
Kū Mai Ka Hula takes place on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Castle Theater starting at 1 p.m. The event features a solo and group competition and awards ceremony.
Prior to the competition, a pre-event performance by Maui guitarist and vocalist Kaleo Phillips, will be held from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at the Yokouchi Pavilion. There will also be shop displays of made-in-Hawai’i products from an array of crafters and artisans.
Kū Mai Ka Hula tickets are $25 (plus applicable fees).
