BREAKING: UH Maui College Closed For the Day Following Threat

The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College campus in Kahului is closed for the remainder of the day after a threat was received by the campus early this morning.

In response UH sent a campus-wide alert at 11:07 a.m. that said the following:

“Aloha UH Maui College Ohana:

Important update to the anonymous threat received by the campus early this morning. After conferring with Maui Police, the campus will now be closed for the rest of the day, Friday, October 4, 2019, as a precautionary measure.

Please depart from the campus in a safe an orderly manner.

If you ever have any safety concerns, please contact campus security at 984-3255 or call 911.”

University of Hawaiʻi spokesperson, Dan Meisenzahl said that the decision to close the campus was done out of an abundance of caution.

“This is a precautionary step but one that we felt was necessary because the safety of our campus community is our top priority. We thank police for their assistance and guidance,” he said.

Banners posted at each entrance of the college noted that the college was closed, “due to unforeseen circumstances,” and that normal operations would resume, “as soon as possible.”

The incident is currently being investigated by Maui police.

Further details were are not available at this time.
