Work Begins on 20 Temporary Emergency Shelters at Waiale Park in Wailuku

The County of Maui begins construction tomorrow, May 22 on an estimated 20 temporary emergency shelters at Waiale Park in Wailuku for displaced families and individuals impacted by COVID-19.  The park is located between Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center and the Hale Makana O Waiale apartments.

Hawaiʻi National Guardsmen and personnel from the Maui Fire Department and Department of Parks and Recreation will work on construction.

County officials say security will be provided at Waiale Park for the safety and protection of residents. Sheltered individuals will be prescreened before being accepted. No drugs or alcohol will be allowed on the premises.

Units will be available for individuals, couples or families. Hygiene facilities will also be provided.

“We’re working with our local agency partners to provide wrap-around services, such as food assistance and outpatient and residential treatment, as part of the project,” said Mayor Victorino in a press release announcement. “I want to stress that this is a temporary emergency measure. Our goal continues to be finding permanent housing for our residents.

“We also want to mahalo all our service providers and volunteers for their ongoing efforts to serve our community.”

More information, including an opening date for the temporary emergency shelter project, will be provided in the future.
