The US Senate Democratic leadership today announced the selection of Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) to serve on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“As we work to confront the global climate crisis and reinforce Hawai‘i’s key role in rebuilding our relationships in the Asia Pacific region, this will put me in a better position to serve Hawai‘i and the nation and represent our values on the global stage,” Sen. Schatz said in a news release. “It is an honor, and I look forward to working with the committee and the new administration to shape American foreign policy and advance US leadership around the world.”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is one of the original 10 standing committees of the Senate. Throughout its history, the committee has been instrumental in developing and influencing US foreign policy. It holds jurisdiction over all diplomatic nominations, and has historically assisted in the negotiation of treaties. Through these powers, the committee has helped shape foreign policy of broad significance, in matters of war and peace and international relations.

Sen. Schatz will retain his seats on the Senate Committee on Appropriations, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics.

Sen. Schatz also will continue to serve as Chief Deputy Whip, a leadership position that gives him a key role in shaping policy and communications for the new Senate Democratic majority.
