No Tsunami Threat to Hawai‘i After 7.1 Japan Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a preliminary magnitude 7.1 earthquake reported at 4:07 a.m. HST on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, near the east coast of Honshu Japan.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.
The US Geological Survey reports that the quake occurred at a depth of 50.6 km (31.4 miles) and was located:
- 43.7 miles WSW of Namie, Fukushima, Japan
- 51.2 miles NNW of Ishinomaki, Miyagi, Japan
- 51.3 miles WNW of Watari, Miyagi, Japan
- 52.9 miles WNW of Iwanuma, Miyagi, Japan
- 58.5 miles NW of Sendai, Miyagi, Japan
